Reasons my car won't start

List of reasons my car won't start

Why Your Car Won’t Start

If your car isn’t starting, there could be a number of reasons. Here’s a short, helpful list of common reasons your vehicle likely isn’t starting:

  • The car is silent when key is turned in ignition. This often means the battery cables are corroded and need replaced. You can disconnect the battery (correctly!) and brush the cables clean to see if that works.

  • The car makes a clicking noise but won't start. This is a good indicator the battery has died. That, or a poor connection to the starter.

  • The car cranks over but won't start. It’s possible you’re out of fuel or your spark plugs are not getting the electrical spark they need.

  • The engine starts but dies. Most cars have fuel injectors these days. If this is the case for you then it’s best to bring your car into your Hastings Ford Lincoln Dealership.

  • The car won't start on rainy days. Check your distributor cap for dampness. If it’s damp, use some mechanic's solvent to dry up the moisture. To evaporate the condensation inside the cap, turn it upside down and pour/spray solvent into it. Swish it around and pour it out. Then. dry the cap really well with a clean, lint-free rag and put the cap back on.

Only use clean solvent; a small speck of dirt can foul the points. Gasoline won't work because sparks willignite gasoline fumes and cause an explosion or a fire.

  • The car won't start on cold mornings. Again, you will need a certified professional on the Hastings Ford Lincoln team to help you with this.

The engine misses while idling. Check to see if the spark plugs need replaced.  Your car’s owner manual will likely be able to help you with that. Also check the fuel pump and fuel filter. Most people will need a professional to help them with this.
